From 'Shakespeare Wallah', the bittersweet tale of a wandering theatrical company in India, which established the company's reputation in 1965, to 1987's 'Maurice', the controversial study of homosexuality in the Edwardian era that launched the career of Hugh Grant, and the poignant 1992 Oscar-winning film 'Howards End' starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, the Merchant Ivory name is synonymous with sumptuously-produced yet subtly-crafted period dramas.
